Here in Western North Carolina, someone is always making something that becomes an heirloom.
Supporting the Appalachian Women's Museum
The Appalachian Women's Museum is housed at the historic Monteith Farmstead in Dillsboro, NC — a 1908 farmhouse once home to sisters Edith and Edna Monteith, now restored and run primarily by a volunteer board, with one part-time staff member, to collect, preserve, and share the stories of Southern Appalachian women, past, present, and future. It's a small, community-driven museum honoring the quilters, canners, farmers, postmasters, and craftswomen whose everyday resilience shaped this region — alongside women whose achievements were truly exceptional.
We chose to support the Appalachian Women's Museum because their mission mirrors our own. Just as Crafter's Camera documents the hands and stories of today's WNC artisans before they're lost to time, the Appalachian Women's Museum preserves the stories of the women who came before them — many of whom were themselves quilters, weavers, and makers keeping their families fed through their craft. Every sale made through our website contributes 8% directly to the museum, helping keep this small piece of Appalachian women's history alive for future generations to visit. Located in the same Dillsboro community where so many of our own crafter stories begin — and just down the road from where the woman behind Crafter's Camera calls home
